Chemex, gerberas, and the 85mm

Ok ok, so I'm sorry it's been over a month since I first announced a new lens toy (didn't mean to be such a tease!), but I finally get to show it off in this post. This morning's little coffee routine was all shot on the 85mm f1.8, a pretty sweet not-so-little lens. It produces some lovely creamy bokeh and allows me to creep on street scenes from a bit farther away. It's also great for portrait-y shots, as there's less distortion than on the 50mm.

This morning was also the first time I finally got to use the Chemex, with some great Yemen Moka Sanani beans (at $32.75/lb, they better be!) no less. When I first smelled the whole beans, they really reminded me more of dark chocolate than coffee, but they opened up nicely after grinding.

I kinda reek of coffee today... with an early morning start at Abraco, then Roasting Plant for beans, then Chemex-ing those beans, then more coffee at the Kava Cafe on the west side, it may have been a tad overkill. I took three out of the six pictures here - can you guess which ones? :P

  2. Which 3; hmmm...

Kinda liking the Hario Buono kettle. Makes so much sense. Guess you can use it to water the flowers, too; multi-tasker!

...it's tempting to guess you took the photos you aren't in, but I'm not sure that would be right?

Dear Alice, I have a technical question that I really appreciate if you can help me.
I own a Canon 500D. Now I want to buy a lens. I have two choices : 85mm f/1.8 and 50mm f1.4 and the main purpose of my photography is Family and baby shoots. I also do food photography. I wanted to know which lens is a better choice for me, in your opinion?

    Thank you so much. xo

  11. very good technique of 85 mm = 120mm in APS-C, the barrel is less expensive than the Nikon Lens, the remarkable result in coffee

  14. This type of post makes me swoon! I love coffee & flowers and the light in your place makes me beyond envious! Thanks for sharing your new toy - almost forgot about that!

On a side note I was in William Sonoma on Friday and saw a Chemex and desperately wanted to purchase one... not only have I never tried coffee out of one but aren't they just so picturesque and beautiful as a decor piece? Love your little kettle in this pic too!
