Weekend brunch

As a foodie, I'm supposed to hate the concept of brunch and the inanity of "brunch food." Yet every weekend, I find myself at a new or tried and true brunch spot. I suppose it's hard to avoid in this city. Even normally great and exciting restaurants churn out brunch menus, because that's just the thing to do on weekends. (And let's face it - I'm never up early enough on the weekends to consume breakfast and lunch separately.) Some places do a great job of having at least some "lunchy" foods on the brunch menu (like Back Forty and Bowery Diner). And of course, dim sum is always an alternative!

I rounded up some iPhone photos of brunch in the past month or so (well, a breakfast from Buvette snuck in there). Some places I really enjoy didn't make the cut, as the natural light in those places is bust. They are worth checking out though - Saxon & Parole and Brindle Room.

There you have it - I hope this will serve as a little informal brunch guide for any of you visiting NYC. Happy brunching!

  10. Hello Alice! I'm a girl from Germany who discovered your blog and your photography just a few days ago, and I wanted to let you know that I absolutely love and adore your photography. Your style is incredible, you're able to transport moods and atmosphere in a way I'm not sure I've ever seen before (and I look at like a million photos a day). Wow. I am so very very happy that I discovered your work, and I can't wait to see more of your stunning photography in the future :-) I hope you don't mind me asking one question (oh I have hundred of questions, but I don't want to be cheeky so I'm limiting it to one of the questions that is giving me sleepless nights :( ) - Which (Photoshop or Lightroom -) technique do you use to brighten your digital images when post processing? They often have such a light and airy touch, and I can not for the life of me find out how that is achieved exactly (and believe me, I'm trying to achieve something like that for weeks and months now, with a LOT of despair at times since I'm actually not a newbie to processing...) You would make me one very happy girl if you could give me any small little hint :)

Keep up the great work, you've got one more huge fan from Europe!! ;)

    Julia

(Do you ship your prints on etsy to Europe too, or is it US only? I'll move in 3 months and there are lots of walls that need beautiful pictures!!)

  14. Hi Julia!

Thanks for your comment. I use Photoshop (ACR) to bump up my exposure and curves to brighten my images usually. There's not really much of a secret to it, I'm afraid. :P Of course, it helps to start out with a bright and airy picture/good light in the first place.

I definitely ship internationally, so please feel free to check out the shop! Almost all of the photos on my blog are available as prints too.

  15. come on! this is not fair. compared to this, my daily lunches look so bland and boring. i don't eat out very often, but i've got to step it up. i'm probably missing out on some great places and food.

  23. Alice, I don't know how and where you put away so much food in that slender bod of yours! If I actually finished one of these plates in its entirety, I would've been rounder than Mr Porkie.

  28. Who says you're supposed to hate brunch? Portland is like the supreme foodie town, and you can hardly get into a place for brunch without an hour wait. There's a fantastic Cuban restaurant just about a 2 minute bike ride from our apartment that we make regular visits to on weekends. Dim sum is also one of my very favorite brunch options. Mmmm.

Being a foodie is about enjoying food, right? No worries :)
